In July, Richland First Steps had the pleasure of celebrating the children and families who completed our Early Childhood Program.
Graduation marked an exciting milestone for the entire family. Through the program, children developed the early learning, language, social, and emotional skills they will need to enter 4K prepared, confident, and ready to thrive. Parents and caregivers also gained knowledge, resources, and practical tools to continue supporting their children’s learning at home and as they transition into the classroom.
Why Early Childhood Education Matters
A child’s earliest years build the foundation for future learning, behavior, and health. During the first few years of life, more than 1 million new connections form in a child’s brain every second. This work is especially important in our community. In Richland County, 43% of kindergartners are considered not ready for school. Research also shows that First Steps programs make a difference. Children who received First Steps services were 74% more likely to score at the highest level on the Kindergarten Readiness Assessment and 34% less likely to be chronically absent in kindergarten than similar children who did not receive services. When we prepare children and empower their parents and caregivers, we give the whole family a stronger start.
It has been a privilege to walk alongside these children and families during such important years of growth and development. We will miss seeing their smiling faces each day, but we know that wherever they go, they will always be part of the Richland First Steps family.
We are incredibly proud of our graduates and cannot wait to see them succeed in 4K and beyond!
