Let’s get physical! Today’s Week of the Young Child 2022 theme is here to help you stay fit, because, in the words of Conscious Discipline founder Dr. Becky Bailey, “The best exercise for the brain is exercise!”

When you exercise together as a family or a classroom family you are building stronger bonds while building stronger bodies. According to KidsHealth, just a few of the benefits of exercise for children include:

  • stronger muscles and bones
  • leaner bodies
  • less risk of becoming overweight
  • a lower chance of getting type 2 diabetes
  • lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels
  • a better outlook on life

We love this video our Excellence in Care and Early Learning (ExCEL) family created. Try their exercise routine, or create one of your own!

Here are some more ways you can get started incorporating exercise into your family routines:

PRE- AND POST-DINNER WALKS | Get moving and get connected! Walking with children not only helps the body, it helps the mind. Talking with kids about what you see as you walk will help them grow their
vocabulary and develop curiosity about the world around them.

DANCE PARTY! | Crank up the music and designate a time of the week for a family dance party! Get creative – turn out the lights and add glow sticks for extra fun.

CALMING EXERCISES | When done with high intensity exercise with your kids, it’s good to help them calm down. Try some belly breathing, simple stretches, or blowing bubbles.
